Through this workshop, we help participants to develop their artistic senses in the service of multimedia and to sharpen their curiosity for musical culture beyond their chosen fields. They develop new ways of perceiving technology in art through DJing.
The profession of DJ (Disk jockey) requires a developed artistic sense and a boundless passion for music. Like many music professionals, the DJ is on the lookout for all the trends of the moment, but must also anticipate those of tomorrow.
Participants in the ‘DJing’ workshop develop an in-depth knowledge of the links between the traditional context of the musical arts and the use of technology, so that they can adapt their musical choices to suit the venue they are mixing in and the audience they need to win over.
With Africulturban’s team of artists and experts, participants acquire knowledge and skills in music, from conceptual expressions of art to sound techniques such as setting up equipment, basic music structure, beatmatching, basic mixing, creating a playlist, scratching, fading, micing, composing and arranging music.

Throughout the workshop, participants are encouraged to experiment and develop an individual approach to communicating their ideas to the world, translating self-expression into music and DJing. Learners will be encouraged to be versatile, i.e. to be able to adapt to all musical media, whether vinyl, CD or digital files.
At the end of their training, the beneficiaries of the Djing cohort of the Naatange Art La programme are prepared to enter the multimedia artistic field as freelance artists, entrepreneurs or experts in musical composition, mixing, sound techniques, or even discotheque managers or production managers within a record company.

Partners

Founded in February 2006 by BMG 44’s Matador, the Africulturban association’s first action was to help flood victims by organising solidarity concerts.

Today, it is more focused on providing a framework for musical creation, organising festivals and providing professional training, alternative education, new information and communication technologies and social work. In organising its activities, Africulturban focuses on the promotion, dissemination and development of hip hop and urban cultures, while defining itself as a project management and monitoring structure. Its activities include a number of elements that govern the foundations of urban cultures by organising concerts, exhibitions, training workshops, festivals, performances and professional meetings covering all the artistic disciplines represented in Hip Hop and urban cultures: Breakdance, Mcing, Deejaying, Rap, Slam, Graffiti, Urban wear, Rollers and other urban music.

In its ten years of existence, Africulturban has forged a number of partnerships all over the world and now has over 1,250 people affiliated to the organisation and working in the various sectors of hip hop and urban culture.

It has a recording studio, a rehearsal room, a graphics workshop and a photo and video studio.

Thanks to its dynamism, Africulturban has succeeded in setting up a number of cultural projects, including Festa2H (international hip hop and urban culture festival) Hip Hop Akademy (urban culture training centre) Flow Up (Senegalese hip hop springboard) Yuma (Youth Urban Media Academy) Hip Hop Education (hip hop project in schools) Urban Doc (first hip hop and urban culture documentation centre).
